Informative Essay: Definition & Purpose
An informative essay is an academic piece of writing whose purpose is to inform the readers of a person, place, object, or event. Informative essays answer the question of who, what, why, when or where.
How to write an informative essay
Most college students write such essays without a plan, and I can guarantee you that is the formula to an underwhelming piece. Always have some structure before writing anything, especially if it will be graded. SO here is a definitive writing process for an informative essay.
Start by selecting a topic. A good way to choose a topic is by evaluating your interests. We all know how easy it is to write about something we are passionate about. Writing becomes so effortless when we write about topics we care about.
If that is a bit difficult, you can check out our list of informative essay topics down featured in this article.
Do your research on the topic and gather ideas concerning the subject. Once you have chosen a topic, find fact-based articles that contain information about the subject from more than one source. You don’t have to worry too much about these sources as long as they are reliable and unbiased.
Now it’s time to write down all the facts you’ve gathered.
Organize your ideas and formulate your thesis statement and topic sentences. The thesis statement usually appears in the introduction. It should capture your readers’ attention and provide them with a preview of what they are about to read.
Readers should get an idea of your essay’s main argument after reading the topic sentence. Make sure that it is informative and interesting for your audience.
Create an outline and ensure one idea flows well to the next. It is important to use transitions in between your sentences that contain information. This will create a flow when the reader reads through your essay.
Make sure to use simple language that people can understand. Keep your sentences concise. Avoid using long, complex words just for show.
End your essay with a conclusion that follows all of these guidelines. You don’t have to include any new information in this section–it’s an extension
Edit your work. Of course, your first draft will be far from ready for submission. Make sure your formatting is as instructed. Also, ensure you have correct paragraph structure, zero plagiarism, correct grammar and spelling. Lastly, check if your argument is relevant to the informative essay.
Organizing Your Information for an Informative Essay
Each person has a different way of organizing their information. Find the method that works best for you and stick to it. Here are some tips:
1. Arrange your ideas in an outline form and sort them into categories such as introduction, main body and conclusion. An outline starts with the introduction, which presents your thesis statement along with your topic sentence. The main body of your essay includes the facts you have gathered through your research. Lastly, the conclusion should include a summary of your main points.
2. Use headings to differentiate sections in your essay. You can use numbers or letters, both are equally effective when documenting the different sections of an informative essay.
3. Create mind maps which is a more visual approach on how you should organize your information. Mind maps start with the central idea and branch out to other ideas. That’s all there is to it!
4. The simplest and quickest method of organizing information for an informative essay would be list-making. Just write down your points one after another in a bullet point format; don’t forget to use transition words whenever necessary.
5. Use the linking words that we have listed below to make the flow of your paragraph more coherent and smooth:
6. If you are still having trouble organizing your ideas, ask yourself these questions: What is this essay about? How does it start? How will I end it?
The methods above should make it easier for you to complete your informative essay.

These resorts stay open all year round and offer activities such as ziplines and bungee jumping so you can spend time outdoors in the sunshine.
After your introduction, you will need to present the details of your argument in one or more body paragraphs. These should be well-developed and organized using sub-heads where appropriate. Each body paragraph must have a topic sentence representing the main point you wish to make about your chosen subject. As with any composition, try to use transition words to connect the different ideas presented in each body paragraph.

Informative Essay about Toilets
Your modern toilet is a remarkable invention—one of the most important of the 20th century. Without it, our lives would be very different. In this essay, I will explain how the flush toilet works and how toilets have evolved.
A toilet is essentially a glorified hole in the ground. A flush toilet consists of a bowl, a tank full of water, and a mechanism to remove dirty water from the bowl. When you push down on the handle, it opens a valve at the bottom of the tank, allowing water to flow into the bowl. When the tank is full, the valve closes, and water begins to fill up behind it inside a large tube called the siphon. The weight of the water on top of the valve squeezes it down so that no more water can enter the bowl. This pressure causes all of the dirty water in the bowl to be sucked out through holes in the rim and down into the sewage system.
About 10 minutes later, afloat in the tank reaches a certain height and shuts off water flow to the tank. The water level slowly begins to fall inside the tank, creating suction at low pressure inside the siphon tube. This creates a partial vacuum that sucks water from below through the siphon tube and into the tank, refilling the bowl. We are left with clean water in the bottom of the bowl, and all of the waste flushed out through the sewer lines.
